Spain so far A (very) few images of our travels past Gibraltar, along the southern coast of Spain and then on up to Barcelona. Though we've been in Barcelona for nearly three months we haven't a single picture to prove it!
Portugal The Douro River Valley, Porto, Lisbon, Sintra, Bathala, Alcantra, Porto Corvo, Guincho, Cascais...
Azores to Portugal We made this passage in company with S/V Valiant Lady. They're a bit smaller than we are, so we did sail a bit slower to stay near, except for the day Ed inadvertently broke off the ignition key while they were motorsailing very close to the wind to get north of us and didn't want to turn the engine off until they managed to find the elusive spare key. It was great fun to make landfall together once again.
The WallNearly every boat that calls at Horta makes an offering of art to the wall. Not doing so is considered to be bad luck and tales abound of vessels who failed to leave their mark here only to encounter serious difficulties of one sort or another. We do not really consider ourselves to be superstitious people, but we must report to you that we were only aware of one boat who chose not to make such an offering while we were there, as they said they were just making a delivery. We were alarmed to hear the other day that they were dismasted on their way to England. AzoresThe Azores are truly an undiscovered set of jewels in the middle of the Atlantic. And I really do hope they stay that way. To make landfall in Horta on one's own boat is a spectacular experience. Bermuda to the AzoresFeast or famine wind-wise on this leg of the passage. Leaving Antigua - Offering to Ye Gods of the SeaBlackberry Brandy (yuk!) is a Shannon Yachts tradition. Every Shannon has a bottle on board when christened and is suppose to remain stocked for times such as these. Up Island and Passage PrepA few photos from our trip up to Antigua and getting ready for the crossing
Down IslandAn assortment of photos taken between Guadeloupe and the Grenadines - Ironically, we loved the Grenadines (best?) and had the most relaxing time of our trip so far - great sailing, great snorkeling, great friends - unfortunately our camera seldom made it into the going ashore bag and so we haven't the photos to prove it. Just imagine a perfect palm-fringed coral beach, turquoise water (88o), brilliant skies with puffy clouds - get the picture?
Carnival - St. KittsNew Years is Carnival-time in St. Kitts and Nevis. Down the ditch, the passage south and being thereErshters Maryland-styleFriend and EDABL enthusiast Brendan Cooney joined us for a day of homage to the venerable Maryland Oyster. Unfortunately, Mark can't bear the thought of ingesting such creatures, but Heidi and Brendan didn't let that deter them from their search for the best possible rendition - would it be oyster shooters or oysters grilled or scalded or stewed or fried or raw on the half-shell (with lemon or cocktail sauce or ... or all of the above). One hundred oysters (or roughly 3 quarts) later, they were stuffed, but still divided. Despite such indulgence, nothing could keep them from a pilgrimage to Brendan's favorite crab house (Buddy's) for dinner. Mark enjoyed a sandwich of Southern Maryland Stuffed Ham (stuffed with collard greens, kale, and probably a touch of tobacco leaves as well). Vervacious Photo Archives 2003
